Bioscan employs a dedicated team of experienced full-time professionals at its
Oxford office, but where necessary we are also able to draw upon a range of
specialist sub-contractors with whom we have an excellent working relationship,
as well as experts in the academic world.
The company’s geographic range of work covers all of the UK, and extends
overseas. Clients include energy and utility companies, mineral operators,
property developers and house builders, private individuals, local authorities,
government agencies, and both national and international conservation
organisations.

Dominic Woodfield BSc (Hons) CEnv MIEEM
Director
Dominic Woodfield is the Managing Director at Bioscan, joining the company in December 1998 as senior ecologist and becoming a director in 2000. After graduating in 1993 he worked briefly for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and has since been a UK-based ecological consultant working principally for private sector clients.
Dominic’s project experience is comprehensive, ranging from single-species issues on small sites, through to EIA co-ordination on large infrastructure projects, and from project inception and scheme design through to implementation, site monitoring and research studies. Specialist areas include botany, ornithology, protected species, environmental planning, legal compliance and EIA.
As an expert witness, Dominic has presented evidence on a diverse range of ecology topics for call-ins, appeals, Transport and Works inquires, Compulsory Purchase Order inquiries and judicial review cases.
Derek Finnie MSc BSc (Hons) CEnv MIEEM
Principal Consultant
Derek has over 13 years experience as a consultant ecologist, both in the UK and Africa. His professional career commenced as an ecologist with Penny Anderson Associates and he has held the positions of principal ecologist at Faber Maunsell and senior ecologist at Scott Wilson.
Derek is a specialist ornithologist, mammalogist and herpetologist, holding a range of protected species survey licences, but he also has skills and experience in many other areas of ecological assessment including botanical surveys. He has an extensive understanding of environmental legislation including Environmental Assessment and Appropriate Assessment.
Sam Watson BSc (Hons) MIEEM
Senior Consultant
Sam graduated with an honours degree in Ecology in 2002 and after periods of employment with Hastings Borough Council and as a trainee Conservation Ranger in Rye Bay, he joined Bioscan in 2003.
As well as an expanding role in project management, Sam conducts a variety of field surveys including Phase 1 habitat surveys and protected species, in particular badgers, bats and great crested newts for which he holds both survey and development/mitigation licences.
